The trailer goes on with various experts explaining the plight of Kaavan, who had been held in captivity for 35 years — with a decade spent alone — in awful conditions.
“Kaavan was in a terrible state,” Mark Cowne of Free the Wild, a charity he and Cher helped co-found to end the suffering of wild animals that are held in captivity, says in the video. “It was absolutely shocking.”
Clips are then shown of the efforts required to move Kaavan from the Pakistan zoo and across Asia to a new sanctuary. “We put together the right team. We had to get him out,” Cher narrates. “We just didn’t stop fighting.”
Cher & The Loneliest Elephant is set for an early launch on Paramount+ on Earth Day, April 22. It then premieres on the Smithsonian Channel at 8 p.m. ET May 19.
