Hair loss treatment: Oil rich in fatty acids to fight inflammation and increase hair growt

Hair undergoes cyclical changes and grows and sheds itself in phases with a multitude of factors coming into play for growth and fall as well. If struggling with hair loss or thinning out of hair, you are far from alone. Can a certain oil made from seeds help cure your hair loss woes and increase hair growth?

Jamaican black castor oil is derived from the seeds of the castor bean (Ricinus communis) and has industrial applications as a lubricant as well as use as an additive in cosmetics and foods.

Containing high amounts of ricinoleic acid, an omega-9 fatty acid, Jamaican black castor oil has high levels of antioxidants with anti-inflammatory properties and is also antimicrobial, all of which helps to increase hair growth.

Castor oil is rich in ricinoleic acid—a type of fatty acid found to fight inflammation.

When applied to the scalp, it’s reported to enhance the health of the hair follicles and, in turn, increase hair growth.

In another study published in Hindawi, antioxidant, antimicrobial and free radical scavenging potential of Ricinus communis was investigated.

The study noted: “In the present study, in vitro free radical scavenging activities indicated that both the plants have significant radicals scavenging abilities on DPPH, NO, and superoxide radicals.

“The scavenging effects were powerful, close to the positive controls used in respective assays.

“Therefore, Periploca aphylla and Ricinus communis should be explored as novel potential antioxidants.”

Losing your hair isn’t necessarily something to be worried about.

But, on rare occasions, it could be a tell-tale sign of another medical condition.

You should speak to a doctor if you suddenly start losing your hair, or if you develop bald patches.

There are other treatments for hair loss – including transplants – but they aren’t available on the NHS, and you’ll need to pay for them.

If interested in using castor oil for hair growth, try rubbing just a few drops of the oil into your scalp.

You can also massage a few additional drops of castor oil into your hair’s midsection and ends, which may protect against breakage and improve hair texture.

Although the ideal timing for castor-oil-based hair masks is unknown, letting the oil sit for about two hours may be beneficial.

To prevent oil drippings from staining your clothing and other items, consider covering your head with a shower cap until it’s time to wash your hair.
